Chloe x Halle talk art, relationships, astrology in A&O event - Daily Northwestern Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:13 PM PDT
R&B sister duo Chloe and Halle Bailey, better known as Chloe x Halle, dished on their artistry after performing some of their top songs at Sunday's A&O Productions 2021 Ball. The screening was A&O's first in-person event of the academic year. Northwestern students could attend the event on their computers or Deering Meadow, where admission was capped at 150 due to safety considerations. After the musicians performed their set, they took student questions compiled before the event. Chloe and Halle Bailey opened their set with nostalgic groove "Happy Without Me" and ended with a peaceful rendition of "Cool People." Playful, trash-talking "Busy Boy" and an acoustic version of their summer TikTok hit "Do It" were also among the setlist. Chloe Bailey said the duo's musical influences include Beyoncé, Jill Scott, Grimes and Snoh Aalegra. The sisters got their start by posting covers of songs on YouTube at ages 13 and 11. Their 2013 cover of Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts," which gained more than 20 million views, grabbed the singer's attention. The sisters then signed under Beyoncé's label Parkwood Entertainment and have since performed alongside her in numerous tours, most recently for the U.S. leg of her 2018 "On the Run II Tour." "Every time I see her, she's so gracious, but I do get starstruck just a little bit inside," Chloe Bailey said. "I mean, it's Beyoncé. I don't think it'll ever get old." When asked about their creative process, Chloe Bailey said she prefers to go with the flow, and refrains from putting time stamps on any of her projects. She said the duo's first album took three years to release, after putting out an EP and a mixtape along the way. Despite the duo's famous associated acts, Halle Bailey said the sisters are freelancers, and that she regards the duo's music as "diary entries." "We like to just throw paint at the wall and see what sticks," Halle Bailey said. "We feel that whenever it gets formulaic, we're like, 'Stop it.' This is not organic. This is not the way to go." A student moderator also asked how astrology influences their relationships, both platonic and romantic. When it comes to the Zodiac, Halle Bailey is an Aries Sun and Chloe Bailey is a Cancer Sun. Halle Bailey said she has a great sister relationship with Chloe Bailey as an Aries-Cancer duo. She appreciates her younger sister's Cancerian patience and calm attitude toward conflict — but she wouldn't date a man with a Cancer Sun sign. "As an Aries, I'm very headstrong," Halle Bailey said. "In an argument, I want somebody to scream it out with me… (so) in terms of love, I'm not sure I'm going for Cancer." Kubair Chuchra, a productions committee member, attended the Deering screening of the event. The Medill and Weinberg junior said there was back-and-forth communication with the University to make sure the event was as COVID-19-conscious as possible. "With the campus status going to green, the school approved an in-person event," Chuchra said. "The timing just worked out well, and it's good that things are looking better on campus." All 150 slots filled up, he said, and there were people waiting on standby. Communication freshman Frances Mary McKittrick, attended the in-person portion of the event. Even though Chloe x Halle were not present themselves, she said the event was meaningful to her. "Especially the last song, 'Cool People,' was really lovely to hear back with all these people in a social setting," McKittrick said. "It was like, 'Oh my god, there are cool people in the world and I can see them now.'" Nick Francis contributed reporting. COMMENTARY: Critical Race Theory - The Atlanta Voice Posted: 12 Jun 2021 04:16 AM PDT Critical race theory (CRT) is an academic movement of civil rights scholars and activists in the United States who seek to critically examine the law as it intersects with issues of race and to challenge mainstream liberal approaches to racial justice. Critical race theory examines social, cultural and legal issues as they relate to race and racism. Critical race theory originated in the mid-1970s in the writings of several American legal scholars with focus on race. Both critical race theory and critical legal studies are rooted in critical theory, which argues that social problems are influenced and created more by societal structures and cultural assumptions than by individual and psychological factors. Critical race theory is loosely unified by two common themes: first, that white supremacy, with its societal or structural racism, exists and maintains power through the law; and second, that transforming the relationship between law and racial power, and achieving racial emancipation and anti-subordination more broadly, is possible. Critics of critical race theory argue that it relies on social constructionism, elevates story telling over evidence and reason and rejects the concepts of truth and merit. Hmmm? Is it possible for white nationalists and Black nationalists to agree on certain aspects of CRT? I think, yes! They both seem to agree that governments should stay out of the "theory" business. It's no secret, racism has always been a part of government and education, public and private. Don't get bamboozled by educators, "scholars" and media reporters that you love. School resources, school facilities, school books and school procedures have always been determined by racial motivations. Tell me, how can you be a Black scholar and feel that anything you teach must be done with the permission of closet klansmen, Trump supporters and Dixiecrats? Your ancestors were whipped, beaten and killed for merely teaching their enslaved brothers and sisters how to read and write. No matter what the governments, federal and local, say about CRT, educating our children and our people is our responsibility. Gantt Report readers hate it when I mention HBCUs (but they don't care that daddy sent two of his children to Black colleges). However, who can stop Black colleges or Black professors at white schools from discussing race theories? This CRT debate is simple to me; just tell the children and tell the people the TRUTH! Jay-Z and Beyonce, according to news reports, just purchased a $28 million dollar car. I wonder where a Rolls can take you that a Kia or used car cannot. God willing, I want to set up an independent Journalism academy to teach both youth and adults that are interested in developing professional media skills. The klan, proud boys, boogaloo brothers, oath keepers, the storm and other racist groups can't go to sleep and dream about telling me what to teach Black people! (lower case groups get lower case descriptions) Tell your so-called Black leaders to stop being political and educational puppets. I would love for Black millionaires to join me in funding independent education institutions and stop spending fortunes on toys and trinkets that impress poor people. Wealthy people drive ordinary cars and fly commercial. They don't buy mansions they need to finance or planes that they could lease. One of Mexico's wealthiest businessmen, Carlos Slim, stayed in a three-bedroom house for many years. Warren Buffet can buy any car he wants but drives a Toyota and when he visits Atlanta and needs transportation, he does business with a Black limo company. My kids are all college grads that make their own decisions and follow their own dreams. I only insisted that they learned how to read and write and how to count money. I didn't totally rely on government, or private schools to educate them. Lucius always told his children the truth, about the important stuff, anyway. My children learned very early about racism and devilish beasts! Teach your children the truth yourself! If you want to, teach them about CRT. The Truth About Beyonce's Half-Siblings - Nicki Swift Posted: 29 Mar 2021 12:00 AM PDT Beyoncé's father, Mathew Knowles, fathered a son, Nixon, in 2010, when he was still married to her mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, according to TMZ. The boy's mother, Alexsandra Wright, had filed a paternity suit against Mathew in October 2009. A paternity test confirmed he was Nixon's father, per TMZ. A month later, Tina filed for divorce from her husband, as per a separate TMZ report. She then dropped the matter, but refiled in August 2011, contending the marriage was "insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities." 2010 was a turbulent year for Mathew. According to Cheat Sheet, he had another child that same year — with a different woman. TaQoya Branscomb, a dancer at the time and real estate agent today, said Mathew treated her like the "love of his life" during their affair, per the report. That changed when he learned she was pregnant with Koi, she said, after which he left her, per Cheat Sheet. A DNA test confirmed the paternity in 2014, according to ABC7 Eyewitness News. "I slept with a married man and it was the wrong thing to do, but I have a beautiful daughter that came out of the situation," Branscomb said, per the report. As Capital Xtra noted in 2019, Knowles hasn't publicly acknowledged Koi. In addition to her half-siblings, Beyoncé is step-sisters with actor Bianca Lawson, whose dad is Richard Lawson, Tina's husband. She also has a step-brother from Richard as well. |
