Honeymoon Beauty Survival Kit

Even the most prepared bride can encounter beauty mishaps on her wedding day or her honeymoon. But you've spent so much time (and money!) getting ready; it would be a shame to not be prepared in case something goes wrong.

Honeymoon pampering treats are a must have for any bride in her suitcase. If you spent all your savings on the wedding and don’t have enough money to buy pampering beauty products to pack along on your honeymoon, this article for you.

Unfortunately, summer weather can make managing your beauty routine quite difficult. Humidity makes hair frizz and high temperatures could literally melt your face off ! Rather than getting worked up about how the summer season is ruining your appearance on your honeymoon, build a Honeymoon Summer Beauty Survival Kit. What goes in this kit? Anything you need to look your best on your honeymoon. Here are a few basics to get you started:
§  Don't Run from Sun
Protecting your skin from the summer sun is of extreme importance. The best quality sunscreens will guard against exposure to UVA and UB rays to keep your skin from burning and prevent premature aging and, God forbid, skin Cancer.

Splurge on: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Sun Block, or Bioderma sunblock.
But What happens if you forgot to but your sunblock, Oopsy!

Save on:  A DIY recipe:
  • Get a bottle of your favorite lotion (that doesn’t contain citrus oils!)
  • Add a couple Tablespoons of Zinc Oxide
  • Mix well
  • Use as Sunscreen

§  Fake, Don't Bake
A sun-kissed glow is great -- unfortunately it can cause wrinkles, damaged skin and even skin cancer. Self-tanner isn't for everyone, but a sexy summer glow is. Using a shimmering bronzer gives a great glow and is packaged in an easy application brush.

Splurge on: L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Self-tanner, or Sally Hansen Airbrush in light glow

Save on: Can’t afford a self-tanning spray or a tanning oil? Not traveling to a sunny place. All you have to do is buy Johnson’s baby oil and dab a very small amount on your body. Don’t apply a lot as you might get brunt. . If you'd prefer to ditch the bronze altogether, dust cheeks with a blush. You can also apply your face bronzer all over your body with a big powder brush.

OR: A DIY recipe
All you need is around 40 minutes, about 4 black tea bags, a sponge or a spray bottle, and an area where you can get a little messy. Boil 2 cups of water and add the tea bags. Leave the tea bags in the water for about 15 minutes to steep and allow the water to cool down. Use these 15 minutes that your tea is steeping to have a quick shower to make sure you are not sweaty or oily, that way your tan will dry evenly and without streaks. Once you are out of the shower and your water is dark and cool enough to touch simply pour it into a big bowl or into a clean spray bottle. Make sure you are completely dry before you start your tanning process. Stand in an area where you don’t mind getting a little dirty, a bath tub is probably best so you can sit down (just make sure it’s dry), and drench your sponge in the tea and wipe all over your body. If you decide to use a spray bottle make sure you spray yourself evenly. Let your skin air dry and apply a second coat if you want a darker shade. Et Voila!

§  Frizz Free
Sunning and humidity can leave hair frizzy and unruly. To regain control, start with a serum, but be sure to only use a tiny bit as using too much will weigh your hair down and leave it looking greasy. The next most important item in summer hair care is a hairspray that controls frizz while allowing sexy summer waves to remain soft.

Splurge on: Zero Frizz 100% Rescue Corrective Hair Serum

Save on: Can’t afford a hair anti-frizz or setting spray? Bring an old spray can and clean it well, fill is with virgin lemon juice and spray on your hair. It gives shine and brightness to your hair, and if you are in a sunny spot, your hair with lighten by one shade at least! YAY!
Or a DIY recipe:
    50 ml Rose water
    1 teaspoon Cider Vinegar (organic)
    1/2 teaspoon Silk Protein (Optional)
    1 teaspoon Aloe Vera 10-fold
    1 teaspoon D-Panthenol
5 essential oil (I like Sandalwood). (Optional)

Mix and pour into a spray bottle

§     Kiss me
It goes without saying, you have to keep your lips soft and moisturized on your honeymoon. One of the easiest way to do that is applying a chap stick or a lip blam every couple of hours. Another way is buying a tasty lip scrub and apply everyday.

Splurge on (Not much of a splurging anyway!): Vaseline lip balm and Lush lip scrub.
Save on: If you cannot afford a good moisturizing lip balm or lip scrub or cannot find one near you, here is an easy way to make one yourself.

Lip Balm: (Inspired by Nivea Lip Butters)
You'll Need: container/tin
Base 1: shea butter or coconut oil
Base 2: Vaseline
Color: lipstick or eye shadow
Oil: vitamin E or almond oil
Scent: flavor oils
small microwavable bowl
spoon

Vaseline oil, melt.
Add a drop of vitamin E and a drop of almond oil. It takes about 2 minutes to melt the ingredients.
Melt, add flavor oil, pour, allow to cool.
Then, add vanilla flavored oil (or any of your favorite) and pour into the container. Allow to cool or put in the freezer to speed up the process. Petroleum is highly flammable in its liquid state, so please use caution.

Lip Scrub:
You'll Need: Vaseline-Lip balm (preferably made with beeswax and not with menthol or medicated)-packet of sugar (white, raw, or brown)
Dip the lip balm into the sugar. Scrub on lips and wipe away. If you wanted a flavor or a tint to it, chap off a small slice of your favorite lipstick or chap stick, and mix.

§  Rehydrate
To keep skin looking its best, remember to re-hydrate it, especially after long days spent outside or swimming. Making sure you drink 8 glasses a day is not enough, a body butter will leave skin feeling refreshed and lightly scented. If your skin doesn't get quite dry, go for a good moisturizer.

Spend on: L’Occitane Shea butter body cream, or Body shop body butter, Vaseline body lotion.

Save on: a DIY moisturizing lotion or body butter:
Ingredients
·         1 cup Organic, raw (I used regular, and it was fine) shea butter
·         ½ cup coconut oil
·         ½ cup almond oil
·         Several drops of your favorite essential oils. I chose Lavender, Frankincense and Lime
Instructions
  1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil in the top of a double boiler. Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes.
  2. Stir in almond oil and essential oils of your choosing.*
  3. Place oil mixture in freezer or outside to chill for 20 minutes.
  4. Whip until a butter-like consistency is achieved.
  5. Place in clean, glass jar and enjoy! A little goes a long way.
  6. Not all essential oils are skin friendly or child friendly. Please do your research before adding.
  7. Tips:
  8. You can use whatever oils you wish, just make sure you keep the ratio 75% solid to 25% liquid.
  9. The chilling step is crucial. If you don’t chill it properly, it won’t whip or stay whipped. About 20 minutes in the freezer usually does the trick for this batch. Make sure you scrape down the sides before mixing.
  10. Since this recipe does not contain any water, it will not mold. You should keep in a cool place but it does not have to be refrigerated.
  11. I do not know the exact shelf life but I know it will keep at least a few months, plus.
  12. The body butter melts as it goes on and gets a little oily but absorbs beautifully, quickly and leaves your skin very soft.

§  Lasting Looks
Though it may be a little trickier to get off at the end of the day, waterproof mascara and eyeliner are necessities for your honeymoon.

Splurge on:  YSL shocking Mascara, or Maybelline One by One mascara. M.A.C Gel Liner , or Bobbi Brown gel liner, or Maybelline Gel liner.

Save on: But if you forgot to throw your mascara or your eyeliner into your purse, one can replace the other. Grab your ink/gel liner, and with your eye brow comb, brush it into the ink of your liner and brush over your lashes, for a simple, fresh and clean look. If you forgot your eyeliner, grab your slanted brow or liner brush and rub through your mascara to grab the ink in it.

§  Stay Fresh
Perfume is great for cooler months, but in the summer it can be too heavy. Choosing to go with the light scent of a body splash will keep you smelling great, without overtaking the room.

Splurge on: Bath and Body Works sells several popular Fragrance Mists and Body Splashes (now open in Egypt in City stars, Sun City & Maadi City center)

Spend on: DIY recipe:
Orange Blossom Body Spray
-2 Tablespoon (30ml) filtered water
-60 to 90 drops essential oil of orange (less or more to your liking)
-1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerine
Mix ingredients together in small glass spray bottle and shake well.  Always shake before using.

P.S. some of the recipes are compiled from the internet and other were my own.
