Living in Barcelona, in the center of Catalonia, makes you see how different this minority is and how not able to incorporate with the Spanish society and then with the international society.
The irony is, 2 days before the pope arrived, walking down the street to go home (right in the center of the city), i saw a Pullman bus with photos saying "JO NO T'ESPERO" which means "I am not waiting for you" (not to forget that they are distributing for free some t-shirts with the print of their slogan and image).Another poster saying : " half of young Catalans are not believers, let's work for a secular society" inviting to visit their home page that is nothing but "ateus.org". Maybe what those guys should know is that atheism is a thing and being secular is another thing and i am of those we demand to separate religion from politics. This does not mean I am disrespecting those who do not believe in my God, to each his god and his beliefs and to each his way to celebrate his faith but, disrespecting what the pope represents to ones is disrespecting the 1000s of Christians who were there from all over the world to celebrate with the pope the sanctification de la sagrada familia.
Another photo they are using is the silhouette of the pope with a child holding him and the sentence "apartad a los ninos que viene el papa" which means take the children away the pope is coming referring to what is initially in the bible on the tongue of Jesus as "let the children come to me and do not hinder them" (Matthew 19:14) and many other things, all that under the big slogan of secularism and liberty of expression.
One other slogan is "Maybe there is no God, stop worrying and live your life" or "God does not exist, didn't you notice it?"
A video is circulating on the internet (you tube page and it's the video posted below), making fun of the pope and the church in all what is sacred for Christians under the same coverage of liberty of expression.
The amazing part is what we saw today on the news about how Catalans do not want the pope to come (of course not all of them) and how it is the opposite in Spain (and it is not because i want to say so but it is because that is what came in the news, they are not Spanish and that is it).
Yes the pope came and yes i went there with 100 and 100 of others (An estimated 250,000 people came out to cheer Benedict and watch as he formally inaugurated the architectural marvel, still unfinished after more than 100 years of construction). Yes the pope came and this is something Catalans should be proud of, because the international media will talk about their Barcelona, because this is one great marketing they should benefit from, because the Catholic tourism exists -like it or not- and many would want to come to see the pope or to see Sagrada familia later on. Yes they should be proud Gaudi's work is getting realized and achieved and people will be amazed by his creation and many would hear about him for the first time. So even if it isn't for the pope and what he represents, this visit has its benefits to the entire country, the entire city.
Yes the pope is a man like every single one of us, he is allowed to commit mistakes and he has to, or else he wouldn't be a man. Yes the pope is a man like me and you and if you think he's something else then you are completely wrong.
I may not like the pope, i may not be christian, i may not be a believer, i may not be a catholic, i may not be a muslim, i may not care about any religion but, i wouldn't offend anyone's beliefs, i wouldn't allow myself to degrade anyone's god nor church.
The freedom and liberty of expression can reach sometimes the level of discrimination and even more, the level of terrorism where one cannot feel secure anymore or a part of the society he lives in. All those who were against, all the negative vibes we lived for days in the city, all what went in the media, all that created a feeling of terror in many of us that something bad is going to happen but like always and like everywhere on earth there were is more noise there's less damages and less action. This minority of Catalans invaded our streets and balconies and screens and at the end nothing happened, not that we wanted anything bad to happen but the fear was stronger than us.
Few months ago, any word coming out from the mouth of a Muslim against the church was an offensive act, and still it is. Few months ago any word coming out from the mouth of a Christian against a Muslin was so offensive (check what happened this September in the USA), but no one is allowed to think that words coming from a mouth of an atheist are offensive, they are just liberty of expression and i don't know why.
About 200 men and women locked lips for five minutes, breaking off to shout 'Get out,' and 'pedophile' as the 83-year-old pontiff passed by one of the main streets in Barcelona and I can't but respect their unity and act since no violence was caused and since they had their civilized way of expressing themselves.
If words are not able to explain the nor show the amount of young between all those who were there standing in the sun just to wait for the pope to pass so that they wave to him (and maybe he waves back if he sees them), the photos can explain more.
