Molly Goddard - The Tulle Princess
Over the past 5 years
Molly Goddard has made a massive name for herself within fashion, partially thanks to
Vogue who have continued to give her tons of support over the years. Secondly because one of her dresses featured in
Killing Eve and everyone went wild for it. Personally I
first heard of Molly Goddard through reading about her in Vogue. At the time she was up and coming but I think she has fully risen now to become a notable designer.
Spring/Summer 2020
Molly described this collection as 'straightforward and simple,' (
Vogue) and in so many ways, it simply is Molly Goddard but I think you can see little changes within her creations. When she first started to do presentations, all of the dresses were the tulle masterpieces which are now few and far between within her runways. The collection features tulle but in some ways it is more subtle and an addition rather than being the entire construct of an outfit.
For the first time ever, Molly played around with denim, a completely different fabric from tulle. However, even within the denim there is volume, ruffles and layers. The construction is amazing. There are also knitwear pieces with tulle skirt combos but my favourite is of course the classic Molly Goddard tulle masterpiece. Last season it came in a striking magenta but this season it comes in a canary yellow, very spring time appropriate. This time it is a midi length and it balloons out at the bottom. I'm pretty sure the perimeter of the bottom of the dress must be as wide as the length of the dress. All of the detailing is stunning even though it is all made from one fabric, I just wonder how heavy it must be.
There is so much femininity within this runway. All the ruffles and draping creates such a feminine shape and there is even a dress which kind of plays into the nightwear theme of the
Jonathan Simkhai runway, it has that same relaxed, V neck cotton nightdress feel about it. Once again the ruffles will not be denied on this dress but they add texture and make it a slightly more daytime appropriate piece.
The hair and makeup plays into this punk/grunge vibe that seems to be ridiculously popular this season. With a thick line of black eyeliner, creating a intimidating eye look and the hair pulled back into a bun with hair spiking out, sort of punk and it has a sort of damp look to it. It looks like the models are ready to fight. This makeup was kind of at odds with the femininity of the dresses and also some of the outfit colours; there were some bright colours this season. The canary yellow of the tulle dress featured on a lot of the outfits and there was also a gorgeous bright blue that was wrapped around a few outfits. With a tiny bit of lime green, a colour that has been omnipresent in a lot of shows this season.
Based on This Show, What Should You Add to Your S/S Wardrobe?
Tulle is for Adults too! Molly Goddard has made the princess dress acceptable for adults. Before Molly Goddard, I wouldn't have ever considered wearing a tulle dress but she has completely changed my mind on it and so many other people's mind.
Ruffles are Always Good. Ruffles add volume to outfits and even though they once again are considered a younger look, I love them in the context of Molly Goddard. They are great for petite people, like myself, to add a bit of shape.
Grunge isn't Just for the 90s. The Makeup and hair within the show displays the greatness of grunge makeup; dark lips and a bold liner but to balance this strong look there are a lot of bright colours within the outfits.
