I just returned from a 10 day trip to the south of France (yes, again) and thought I'd make some holiday related posts. I have a pretty massive haul coming up, but first thought I'd write about what I took with me on holiday and what I actually ended up using. I thought this could be interesting as a little reminder for any of you about to travel yourselves of both what not to forget, and also what you don't really need.
In the picture above is all of the makeup I took with me, I will be doing a seperate post on the skincare. When I got home and laid it all out I was a bit shocked myself. Obviously I don't need this much makeup on a holiday, especially not on a summer holiday. I always tend to pack a few more makeup things and I'm fine with that, as I do like to change things up and so having a bit of choice is good. However, when it comes to beachy summer holidays, I think almost all of us suddenly care less about changing it up and rather end up going with easy, natural and quick.
First I thought I'd go through what I packed and then at the end I will show you what I actually used.

Above; what I actually ended up using. Now before you ask me where the lip products all have gone off to; let me just admit to having purchased plenty whilst there and I will go more into that in my haul post. So all I used was pretty much what I thought I would, had you asked me before I left. I continued using my Estee Lauder Double Wear Light sample (this sample has lasted a really long time, I'm impressed!) for the few evenings I decided to do the whole makeup thing. Most evenings, or for some nicer lunches, I turned to my favourite tinted moisturiser; Nars Pure Radiant in Alaska. This stuff is still just as good as it's ever been, whenever this sadly runs out I will definitely be re-purchasing. I'm thinking I might even invest in the paler shade for winter.
The Touche Eclat of course got to come along, as always, and I used this almost everyday to add a bit of light and brightness to my face. Both undereyes and as a very natural highlighter. For a bit more 'oomph' I used Touche D'Or. I love this stuff and will be heartbroken when it runs out. If YSL comes out with this in a limited edition collection again, remind me to pick up a few to keep as backups. This amazing multi-tasker is similar to the Touche Eclat in texture but has plenty of glitters. The glitter is not disco ball-y at all though, and somehow magically ends up being quite subtle and beautiful. On light makeup days I would use this as a highlight on the tops of my cheekbones, cupids bow and as a brightening wash across my lids - LOVE this stuff. I also used my Dior Amber Diamond to add a bit more of an intense highlight for evenings when we went out.
To set my makeup I used Urban Decay's De Slick with a hint of YSL's Semi-Loose Powder on my nose, chin and forehead. The YSL powder is my all-time favourite powder and is the most natural, light and virtually un-detectable powder I've ever used.
For bronzer I used Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel. It's not pictured as I used a little sample pot of it that I made myself and threw away before coming back, I will explain more in my upcoming Holiday Empties post! I also used NARS Laguna - needs no explanation, great bronzer. For Blush I stuck with MAC's Pink Cult - it's one of the most natural blushes I own and it's so beautiful when used in combination with a bronzer i.e. Laguna.
I actually didn't end up using much primer. I used nothing under my tinted moisturiser and as I only went for full makeup on a few occasions I of course took the opportunity to make it extra special and applied Clarins Beauty Flash Balm.
For my brows I stuck with MAC Omega as it's natural and easy. I sometimes added a bit of the GOSH Long Lasting Brow Pen in 004 Wheat to add a bit of intensity. My Shu Uemura eyelash curlers got used almost everyday, even when I wasn't wearing any mascara to make me look a bit awake. I took both the DiorShow New Look and my DiorShow Extase Mascara samples. I used the Extase until I decided it was done and so switched to New Look. Both great mascaras, still testing out New Look and will do a review soon! I also managed to stick to my LipFusion 'treatment' and used the XL on a few nights.
I kept the eyeshadow quite simple and my go to look quickly became MAC's Pigment in Naked all over my lid with Corduroy through the crease and Brule on my brow bone and inner corner of my eyes. I would add a fine line of MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, keep my nails painted with OPI Red Lights Ahead... Where? and spritzed myself with Chanel Coco Mademoiselle (I brought two, used one up that I threw away).
Taking all of that into account, my recommendation for holiday makeup packing is that you (probably) need (should take) the following;
- Some kind of primer that you love and that keeps your foundation on for longer. It's going to be hot, there will be long days - you want something that will make your makeup last without having to excuse yourself off to touch up all the time. Who has the time - I know you'd rather be sipping margaritas!
- A tinted moisturiser and a foundation with whatever coverage your comfortable with when going out in the evenings for dinner, drinks and the likes.
- A setting spray and/or powder. One or the other could be enough - you decide!
- A bronzer. I love the natural look of the Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel, so if you have this, definitely take it, if not - take whatever bronzer you have to accentuate the tan and glow your getting from your days of lounging in the sun! Even if it's just a tiny bit (like me) at least this way you can fake the holiday-glow!
- A blush. Chances are, you will only need one. Assess which one you tend to use more often and take this one.
- A smaller eyeshadow palette. I really didn't need two. If you have an empty MAC quad take this and fill it with the 4 shadows you know you will use (think in terms of combination as well). If you don't have an empty quad, take whatever palette you love and use the most or buy one if you own a lot of MAC shadows - it's very cheap at just a few quid.
- A black eyeliner - if this is something you usually use all the time, you will feel naked without it!
- Eyelash curlers - this is great to use even on mornings when you look as tired as you feel. It instantly wakes up your eyes and looking awake can sometimes make you feel more awake as well.
- A liquid concealer. It's lighter and so will be more comfortable to wear. If you want more heavy duty opt for something like Estee Lauder's Double Wear.
- Highlighter. You don't need two like me, but take one if you have one.
- Mascara
- Nail polish. Whatever your wearing before you go so that you can top up. Or go without polish and stay without. But don't keep it when it's chipped half of. Either take it off or re-apply!
- Perfume samples. No need to take heavy glass bottles really unfit for travel when you can take a few samples instead. If you don't have any and no SA seems to want to give one to you when you ask, there's always the Travalo!
- Eyebrows. Whatever you use for your eyebrows, take it with you. If you do nothing else, filling your eyebrows in can make you look a gazillion times more polished in just a few seconds.
- Lipstick. A bright fun color and a more natural one. I loved combining an easy red lip (Dior Addict Extreme in 536 - not pictured cause I forgot!) with just my NARS tinted moisturiser and a groomed brow. Also take a more natural lipstick or gloss if you prefer to have a bit of choice.
And that's it! What I always seem to forget is that somehow when the sun is warm and you slowly get more and more relaxed about seemingly everything, day by day, you don't care to spend too much time doing your makeup. I know at least I get that way. I also tend to stick to a routine quite quickly as I can't bare the thought of dealing with the fuzz of screwing it up and having to correct it. So my tip is to pack whatever you know works for you and to just stick with that and focus more on that hot guy by the pool.
