Gracie Gold's Good Luck Necklace

The 2014 Winter Olympics came to a close on Sunday.  Certainly hard work paid off for the winning athletes, but many of the Olympic champions rely on a little good luck to help them through,  Almost any elite athlete has a superstition or good luck charm that they rely on before a big competition.  Figure skater Gracie Gold is no different.

Gracie always wears a evil eye necklace to ward off bad karma.  When she first started working with a ballet teacher, her teacher gave Gold one before her first national championships. It worked - Gold ended up on the podium!

It must have worked for her in Sochi, too, since her flawless routine in the team skating event helped the United States take home a bronze medal.  Gold also placed 4th in the Ladies Single event.

Interestingly, athletes are prohibited from wearing earrings, necklaces and hair adornments in Olympic-level figure skating competitions.  A strict interpretation of the rules could result in the deduction of critical points from the competitor’s score.

The rules about accessories are rarely enforced and most competitors ignore them altogether. This is fortunate for Gold, who rarely hits the ice without earrings and blingy hair accessories in addition to her evil eye necklace!

There is also a precise limit to the number of crystals that may be applied to a skater's costume. That number is 100,000 - but that's a lot of bling!
